There is a huge difference between plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgery is a field of medicine in which one’s appearance is enhanced using scientifically proven surgical, minimally invasive or non-surgical techniques. Cosmetic surgery differs from plastic surgery as in plastic surgery the main aim is to put the broken tissue back to normal giving it the name as reconstructive surgery. For example if someone had his hand cut while working with a saw, or one had an unfortunate motor vehicle accident and had his face smashed, plastic surgeon will try to put his broken bone, muscles, nerves and blood vessel back together to make the broken hand functional or make the face look as normal as possible. On the other hand cosmetic surgery is a field of surgery in which a normal person’s appearance is enhanced or his normal face, body, hands, feet or any other part of body is made more beautiful than it’s original appearance. Most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures include Botox for wrinkle removal on forehead and around eyes (commonly known as “crow’s feet), skin fillers or dermal fillers like Restylane, Esthelis, Juvederm or Teosyal to erase the laugh lines, liposuction to get rid of unwanted body fat that non-responsive to diet and excercise, hair transplant to treat baldness in males as well as females, nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) to get rid of the hump or make the broad nose pointed and sharp, eye beautifying (blepharoplasty) to make loose skin of the eyelid tightened and young, breast reshaping and enlargement to make small breasts normal and attractive, breast reduction in males suffering from abnormally large breasts caused by fat accumulation (psudo-gynecomastia) or enlarged breast gland (gynecomastia) caused by abnormal hormones, breast reduction in heavy breasted females causing shoulder pain and posture deformity or simple embarrassment, tummy tuck or abdominoplasty for loose skin and muscle as seen in mommy makeover to name a few.
Development of various lasers has played a pivotal role in the popularity of cosmetic surgery in modern times. Laser hair removal to get rid of unwanted hair, laser resurfacing to erase the wrinkles on face, laser tattoo removal, pulsed dye laser for red birthmarks and Fraxel or Mosaic laser for acne scars or any other scar removal have been very useful tools in the armamentarium of cosmetic medicine and surgery.
